Claudel, Camille

(1864-1943)
   sculptor
The sister of the writer paul claudel and an artistic collaborator with auguste rodin, Camille Claudel was born in Fère-en-Tardenois, Aisne. In 1884, she was apprenticed to Rodin and soon became his assistant and his companion. Her early works (L'Abandon, 1888; La Valse, 1893; Les Bavardes, 1897; and L'Âge mûr, 1899) show both his influence and her sensitivity and lyricism. Her portrait of Rodin is probably her best-known work; her later sculptures are more classical in conception. She concentrated mainly on portraits of tableaux of nude figures, often with allegorical subject matter. Claudel received an important government commission in 1893 and continued to exhibit regularly until 1913, when she was institutionalized for an emotional disorder.
